Raymond, the Royal Sheriff
In Pipotown, there is a Sheriff office called the Royal Sheriff Bureau. Raymond is head of the police department and thus, the sheriff. He became a policeman not by vocation but for personal interest. In effect, becoming a policeman, and besides the sheriff, allow him to take advantage of situations, like seizing valuable exhibits, blackmailing delinquents, or merely breaking the law with no consequences.
Besides, he has a very bad temper, he always shout and nearly alcoholic. He has a lot of prejudices and sometimes bungles his work.. As a matter of fact he is not so competent on investigations. However he is the right person to maintain peace in the town. He is the man of the situation when they are violence troubles. That explains why Pipotown is used to being quiet.
Hence, this murder case appears like an opportunity for him to go on a relevant investigation.
This is what happened for him the night when Mathilde died.
Late in the evening, Gabriel rushes in his office and shout breathless: “Mathilde! Mathilde! she lies dead in the bar! Murdered!” After Raymond calmed down Gabriel, he asked for more details and decided to go and pick up Florence before arriving, in a hurry, at Camille’s Bar.
There, he began his investigation. He founds out that the glass that seemed to have poisoned Mathilde had been washed. Many things showed him that clues had been cleaned up in order to conceal the truth. He went behind the counter and found a locked box. He talked Camille into opening it and found lots of money in it, gold money.
He managed to steal this money from Camille because he knew Camille was not supposed to own so much money, because she had a loan to return to Mathilde. This money concealed inside that box was giving Camille a motive to kill Mathilde, but Raymond did not wanted to think so. As a matter of fact he preferred to accuse Nicholas so as to keep the valuable exhibit.
Once more he decided to act dishonestly better than seeking the truth. Nicholas guiltiness was fine for him, and he did not want to investigate deeper. He is, as a matter of fact, not a honest witness.
His accusation lies in proving Nicholas relationship with the well known Duke Cornil. In effect, he is going to prove at the trial that Nicholas is nobody else than the Prince Rupert.
